Types of Listening

There are several types of listening that we often use in certain situation:

  • Active listening                   : Involved with listening with a purpose - to learn, to understand

 

  • Empathic listening            : Form of active listening and attempting to understand others

 

  • Critical Listening                : When we challenge the speaker’s message by evaluating its accuracy, meaningfulness, and utility

 

  • Listening for Enjoyment   : Seeking out situations involving relaxing, fun or emotionally stimulating information.

 

Barriers to Listening

 

  •    Physical distraction : where all the stimuli in the environment distract you from focusing on the message

 

 

 

  •  Mental distraction : wandering of mind when it supposed to be focusing on something

 

  •  Factual distraction : focus so deeply in details until you missed out the main point of the message

 

  •  Semantic distraction : over responding
