What is 'skimming'?

 

Skimming is a type of reading where you read only to get the main idea of the text.

Skimming is very quick to do, where you run over the text and get only the important points or information that you need.

When you skim over a text, you don't need to understand what each word means.

 

Examples of Skimming:

  • NEWSPAPER = to get the news of the day

  • MAGAZINE = to find articles that you find interesting

  • BUSINESS AND TRAVEL BROCHURES = to get informed

 

Type of Reading: SCANNING

 

What is 'scanning'?

 

Scanning is a type of reading where you look for a particular piece of information.

You scan the text to find the details you need.

 

Examples of scanning:

TV Guide in the newspaper

Transportation schedule

Conference guide

-In all these, you need to pay attention to details such as time, programme and place-
