10 Principles of Listening

  • Let the speaker speaks

    • When someone is speaking, do not interrupt. Just listen.

  • Prepare yourself to listen

    • Focus on the message the speaker. Concentrate on the message that the speaker is trying to send.

  • Make the speaker feel at ease

    • Use the appropriate words and gestures to encourage them to continue speaking

  • Do not distract yourself

    • Do not do something else - doodling, looking through the window - focus on the speaker.

  • Be considerate - empathise

    • Try to understand the speaker's point of view. Keep an open mind to their issue.

  • Be patient with the speaker

    • When the speaker has a long pause, it does not necessarily mean that they are finished talking.

  • Do not be prejudice

    • Everyone have their own way of talking. Do not be irritated with their speech delivery.

  • Take note of the tone

    • Notice the speaker's tone of voice and the volume. Sometime the speaker use a different tone to emphasize something.

  • Listen for the idea

    • Link the ideas - the tone of voice, the body language, and the speech itself - to get the entire picture.

  • Read the non-verbal message

    • Focus on the body gestures, expressions. These non-verbal messages are also important to understand the speaker's message.
